Laparoscopy: An answer to ascites of undetermined origin: Retrospective study

Background: Ascites, many of times remained unclassified by Clinical, laboratory and radiological tests. Laparoscopy provides answer to these cases as it has high diagnostic role, Pre therapeutic, Observation staging diseases & therapeutic roles. Diagnostic laparoscopy is a cost-effective procedure with overall accuracy. Methods: This was Retrospective study including all the patients who have been explored for exudative ascites. The conducted at Amandeep Hospital Pathankot, Punjab, India in admitted department gastroenterology collaboration general surgery from June 2015 2022. Fifty low SAAG ascites were included study, underwent find out various etiologies Results: Most our age group 21-40(50%) years mean 38 years. 60% females, while 40% males. Ascitic fluid analysis revealed predominance lymphocytes on cytological (75%), (SAAG<1.1g/dl) (95%) patients. High ADA found (70%). Culture ascitic ZN Staining positive none. Abdominal CT scan, Peritoneal mesenteric thickening (60%) adenopathy (50%), peritoneal nodes (26%) cases. predominant laparoscopic findings (100%), nodules (88%), adhesions (70%), Congested peritoneum (64%). Cirrhosis also noted (10%) common postoperative diagnosis abdominal tuberculosis (60%), malignancy (24%). (8%) unremarkable Conclusion: It can be safely concluded that safe, quick, effective adjunct modalities, establishing conclusive diagnosis, but, whether, will replace imaging studies primary modality needs more evidence.
